About Medical Transcription Careers in Los Angeles

If a person has accurate typing skills, good listening ability and an eye for details – then a career in medicl transcription may be ideal. Los Angeles has many public and privately-owned health care facilites as well as numerous staffing agencies that make this career very in-demand. With its growing population, there is always a need for those with strong clerical or secretarial skills and knowledge of medical terminology.

Training can take anywhere from ten months to two and a half years. Courses normally include, keyboard speed, basic biology, legal issues in health care, office skills as well as an externship – on-the-job training that is unpaid.

Community colleges such as L.A. Trade Technical, Santa Monica and City College offer the most comprehensive instruction possible. The advantage to attending a community, or junior college, is that credits earned may go towards a higher level of education or related career such as nursing or physical therapy. Completing medical transcription at a college also takes the longest due to classes with limited enrollment or require pre-assessment in sujects like Math or English. Unless applying for financial aid, the cost can get steep as units start at $20 each. In recent years, junior colleges have come up wih alternatives such as offering a non-credit curriculum or online classes for credit – which can vary by campus.

Medical transcription training is also available at Abrahm Freidman Occupational Centen, Southern California Regional Occupational Center (SCROC) and East L.A. Occupational Center. Public vocational schools such as these offer several advantages. One is reduced tuition compared to that of a community college, enrollment
is continuous and more emphasis is placed on medical transcription itself. Few of these schools offer college matriculation for those who successfully complete the course. This is ideal for the person who wants to start working as soon as possible and continue their education in near future.

Proprietary schools can be costly but offer the benefits of continous enrollment as well as short-term training. While many of these schools have come and gone in recent, Westchester-based Ladera Career Paths, which opened its doors in 1988, continues to turn out successful graduates. They offer evening classes, financial aid as well as a very comprehensive externship program.

New graduates can look toward a starting salary in the late 20′s to early 30′s annually. Those with experience and extensive education can make as much as $60K per year.
