Once they receive the recordings they listen to them and write down what the physician says regarding diagnosis and treatment and other patient information. The transcriptionist writes down this information with a word processor to construct a document using medical terminology. Once this is completed they give it to the originator for review and get the document apporved. Once it’s approved the document becomes part of the patients file.

Education, Training and Salary

Like many occupations, medical transcriptionists need post secondary education in order to get into the field. This is typically a two year associate degree. Once they finish the degree program they get an internship to gain some practical experience before getting a job on a full time basis. About 67% of medical transcriptionsits are employed full time, 23% part time and 10% of all transcriptionists are self employed. The salary for a medical transcriptionist is usually $32,000 and can range from $24,000 – 45,000 depending on the area.
