To launch your medical transcription career and become a certified medical transcriptionist, it’s important to first find an accredited training program.

The MT certificates from some programs are worth the money and the time. Obviously, the results from these training programs will benefit you, your employer and your patients. Excellent MT training should encompass not only “dotting the i’s” and “crossing the t’s” but also focus greatly on the needs of your patients.

A good MT training program also has your interests in mind. Diploma mills abound on the Internet and you must be wary of finding the training program that actually teaches you all of the indispensable information and will give a certificate that is accredited. Also, follow-up programs are important – ask your training program whether you can contact them post-graduation. Sometimes, these training programs have webinars, seminars that are given over the Internet that can be crucial to your learning process.

The training an MT obtains usually entails listening to dictated recordings made by physicians and other healthcare professionals and then transcribing them, which creates medical reports that eventually become part of patients’ permanent files. Your proofreading skills and correction skills must be excellent. Before your training, you may be asked to take a test that includes grammar, spelling, and editing. These are undeniably the basis of all of your studies because the MT will have to have these skills to begin a training program. You should have a basic, if not excellent, understanding of word processing programs such as Microsoft Word ©, outstanding keyboarding expertise, e-mailing and be proficient in uploading and downloading software.
